Lord, I'm Scared

about

Drew Young will release the new single "Lord, I'm Scared" on April 28th and it is unlike anything the Americana Crooner from New Orleans has recorded. The Drew Young Project launched a generation ago in the musical landscape of Athens, Georgia, and he has since soaked up the sounds and vibes of London, New York, Mississippi, San Francisco and Stockholm. He has been recording in Nashville on a work circuit that includes NOLA and Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
“When I was a kid growing up in Atlanta, I was enamored with my grandfather's stories of traveling the world. He would send postcards from places I had never heard of -- Mali, Korea, Afghanistan, Iran – and exotic places I'd dreamed of seeing, such as Paris, London, and Madrid. I vowed to be an international businessman like him – unless he was a spy, which I secretly thought, and that would be cool, too. Turns out I was more at home behind the wheel of a crappy van loaded with cheap beer, random hotels, smelly band members, Vox amps and Gretsch guitars. I invented myself as the road unfolded in front of that van, becoming a musical journeyman who only knows to stay moving." And here we are, twenty years down the road.
The Drew Young Project finished its fifth album in January 2020 and planned to release it in May 2020 – but the world had other plans. With all gigs and concerts cancelled right now, we are delaying the release of the new record. Yet there were a few tracks we loved and we will be releasing these outtakes one at a time.
The first one is "Lord, I’m Scared," a story of people forced from their land who summon up the courage and commitment to move to a new land and start over. COVID-19 has shaken up the planet and many of us do not know where we will end up on the other side. But we are all in this together -- for the first time in a long while – and we will all be both brave and scared together. This is a watershed moment in our lifetimes. "Lord I'm Scared" is about calling upon our deepest reserves of faith and renewal.
Recorded in Nashville with a cracking band, "Lord, I'm Scared" hits with evocative imagery, soars with gospel harmonies, rides along on a grounding rhythm that powers Drew's baritone as it infuses listeners with hope and faith. “Lord, I’m Scared” recognizes our current common plight while providing a mantra for calm and a rallying cry for community. Together, we all have more hope and less fear.

lyrics

It’s gonna be a hard winter
The crops have grown thinner
Might be time for us to leave
the family land

It’s the same for the neighbors
No money for our labor
We have no other choice
I hope that you will understand

The news from the north
That it’s better up there.
For the Tired and poor
But Lord I’m Scared
Lord I’m Scared

There’s cops at the border
And they have an order
To shoot any man or woman who dares to cross over

This line in the sand
I want you to see that I am just a man
With a hungry kid and a dream
I just need a helping hand

There’s news from the north
That it’s better up there.
For the tired and Poor
But Lord I’m scared
Lord I’m scared

I packed in a hurry
Hands cracked and dirty
The sun on the rise
We crossed to the other side

I know its hard to hear
There’s nothing to fear
I’m just like you
I dream in red white and blue

There’s news from the north
That it’s better up there.
For the tired and poor
But lord I’m scared
Lord I’m Scared
