“I’m Looking… at the Sky.
I’ll take the clouds, I’ll take the rains… The Sunshine
Don’t waste my time asking why. Life Just Gets Me High”

“Life Just Gets Me High”

Walking away from comfortable toxicity (the velvet lined ditch) and not knowing where the journey will go is hard, scary, and liberating all at the same time. Doing so requires a complete reframing of identity, fun, creativity, friendships, relationships, love, work etc…

600 days ago, I walked into a brand-new world where alcohol no longer was my companion
600 mornings of no regrets, no hangovers, no anxiety, no shame.
600 days filled with hope, humility, and calmness (most of the time.)

“Walking down the street of life, weeds are growing through the cracks
I’m not seeing them today, I’m not turning back”

“Life Just Gets Me High”

This song was recorded in Nashville with the usual incredible band that has been the vehicle for most of my songs and recordings over the past 5 years. I truly am not worthy of the talent that the band brings to all our sessions. I am filled with gratitude that the band contribute so much of themselves to the music and bring their “A” game every time.

Scott Neubert outdoes himself on Acoustic Guitar and haunting Pedal Steel and of course, Amy Trail with the big sky, background vocals slays it. Sol Philcox-Littlefield adds just the right electric guitar flourishes. Matt McGee and Andy Hull hold the rhythm down as only they can. Dwain Rowe brings the mojo on keys and well, I do the best that I can to stay out of the way.

The song was tracked by Kyle Hershman, mixed by Ben Lorio, mastered by Joe Vegna, with photography and video by JB Lawrence, layout by Gin Mathers. It truly does take a village.

~~A little bit about the video~~

JB Lawrence and I shot this video in Montana in October 2021 while I was on a pilgrimage to spread my father’s ashes. The short story is that I never knew my father until a few years ago when I traveled to the middle of nowhere Idaho to meet him for essentially the first time. He was living in a small Idaho town, in a tiny apartment, with basically nothing. After a few hours of talking, a certain uneasiness that had always lived inside of me disappeared. Instead of anger or bitterness I became filled with gratitude and forgiveness. Unfortunately, He died a few years after we met, and I only saw him one other time. He had been very sick for a long time, and he had become a prisoner in his broken body. He was essentially one step away from homelessness, could not walk more than a few steps without oxygen etc. but, he was sober and happy and at peace. He had a twinkle in his eye, a kind word for all and a LOT of stories. He had lived quite the life. Unfortunately, that life caught up with him. His wish was to have his ashes spread in Montana. So, I honored his wish and in October 2021 we set him free in the beauty of Yellowstone National Park. I experienced the joy and power of being set free. The main takeaway that I have from this experience is that it is never too late to start anew, nothing is ever beyond redemption and forgiveness is incredibly powerful.

Life has a funny way of offering delightful surprises, doesn’t it?

Thank you for listening.
